<br />
Spray painting things matte black<br />
Neon<br />
Macrame<br />
Light Bulb vases<br />
Hanging Plants!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7450/12379537265_b9b7f33161_o.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7450/12379537265_b9b7f33161_o.jpg" height="960" width="500" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
What you'll need...<br />
1. an old lightglobe - if you're planning on spray painting it like me it can be frosted or clear, but just beware that Australian frosted globes don't seem to just "wash clean" like US ones seem to.<br />
2. spray paint - choose something that will match your string<br />
3. fine sandpaper - you can skip this if you're planning on being extra gentle with your globe for the rest of eternity<br />
4. masking tape or painters tape<br />
5. a small plant, or a cutting. or flowers if you're planning on a vase instead.<br />
6. potting mix<br />
7. everything that the other tutorials I'll link to say that you need, like SAFETY GOGGLES. BE SAFE.<br />
<br />
<br />
And here's what I did...<br />
<br />
1. I cleaned my bulb out of all it's bits as <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w31SI8hr-J0" target="_blank">this tutorial</a> told me to<br />
<br />
2. I got a stick to act as a handle for spray painting, and after lightly sanding my globe by hand, I used the masking tape to tape off the base of the globe. Not taping anything could be cool too, or just half the bulb, or a faux paint-dip look diagonal, or whatever your sweet little head can come up with!<br />
<br />
3. I used that spray paint OUTSIDE to lightly and evenly cover the bulb.<br />
<br />
4. I made a super-simple macrame (some would say cheats' macrame, but I say it is knotting string, so it's macrame, so there!) hanger from brickies string using <a href="http://mylittlesunshinehouse.com/simple-macrame-plant-hangers/" target="_blank">this tutorial</a>. My three strings were 70cm long, and had a knot at 6cm (handle), my first "couples tie" 29cm after that, my second "split the couples" 5cm after that, 4cm was my "couples back together" tie, and all my strings were knotted back together after another 5cm.<br />
<br />
Experiment with different lengths between knots, a different amount of start strings (I chose the minimal three as I though the mash-up was quite busy enough already), different amounts of knots (just keep splitting up and putting together the couples - pretend you're a writer of Home and Away episodes, HA.) And of course with different string types - twine is a classic, as is yarn, but all manner of builders and boat supplies are being used at the moment on "the pins" so just use what ever takes your fancy! I like the idea of threading wooden beads in-between knots like in 70's style macrame, but perhaps with a simpler vessel.<br />
<br />
5. I squished some potting mix into the bulb, be careful of the broken glass edge! You're welcome to just make a hanging vase of course, but I'm lazy when it comes to refreshing vases so I needed something for my succulent to root into. If you're using a plant that has roots already, its better to only half fill the bulb, rinse the dirt off the plant so the roots can fit through the top of the bulb, then fill over the roots with more soil. Give it a good water in, and then slip the bulb into your hanger!<br />
<br />
Then of course its a task of finding a place with enough light to hang your plant - research how much sun your new baby likes, and give it to them!<br />
<br />
:) Have fun, Lauren.<br />

<br />
As part of my reward for not op-shopping for about 3 months, I went to my favourite strip in Belmont and went crazy! Over the five-all-next-door-to-each-other adventure, I managed to get some real gems, including these super kitsch teensy swan vessels. The biggest vases at the back are only about 15cm high, and the rest are just for jewellery and <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tchotchke">Tchotchke</a>'s (daym I love that word). They are all very lucky little things as soon they will be filled with adorable succulents and cacti, and apart from the plastic apricot guy on the right (can't part with him!), will be making their way to Osier customers! I'll post here when they're available on my facebook page, and due to there being plants involved, they'll only be available to my local fans here in Perth - sorry dudes!<br />

And just like in the maker-design world, I'm rocking a name that is not the one scrawled in doctor's handwriting on a birth certificate :)<br />

<br />
<br />
I can't wait to get back into the swing of things creatively - I'm due to get cracking for July's <a href="https://www.facebook.com/MadeOnTheLeft">Made on the Left</a> market where I'll be making a sneaky pre-return showing, so tomorrow's the day to fire-up the laser cutter (did i mention i have one? no? well, i'll introduce you to Crazy Ivan - not my name! - another time) and give it a new home on top of some very lovely vintage flat files I managed to score from Annie [<a href="http://www.facebook.com/OsmosisDesigns?fref=ts">osmosis designs</a>] when she was cleaning up her AMASING Fremantle studio in preparation for a share-space - she now has the awesome new digs of a old workers cottage near a lake! J-E-A-L-O-U-S. Hopefully this is the year of a functional, awesome, dedicated creative space for me too. And the year of a full-time Architecture job hopefully, but thats also another story, unless you happen to know of one going - give me a bell!<br />
<br />
Talk soon, not long now until October when I hope to be back in full force!<br />

<br />
so while my last studio design project is now almost two months behind me (along with my first european travel!) i still have to get a job in my chosen field and re-set-up a working studio for my design work, so although i was hoping to re-launch on my birthday - the 18th of may - this is being re-scheduled to a soft-relaunch throughout october with a website, new shop, new stock, etc in time for the seasonal markets. the old faves will still be around, but will be re-thought as "basics" while the designs I have had a larger hand in design and construction wise will be given more of the limelight. in the meanwhile, please let me know of any awesome studio spaces you know going, or any thoughts you have on the ongoing growth of my little baby :)<br />

If all goes well and I pass the tests that await me in the next few months, I could very well be playing sometime next year, which is a pretty darn scary thought when you see the girls in action.</span><br /><br /><span class="Apple-style-span" >Roller Derby has a fairly wide audience, families with young kids love coming along and watching women kick ass at a sport thats far from "ladylike". You get the groups of teens, and considering watching sports isnt exactly "cool" for most teens these days, we've got to be doing something pretty amasing for them to want to watch. And then we get the old couples who remember Roller Derby in its earlier incarnations of the 20s-50s, and are proud to see girls on skates again, bashing each other up :)</span><br /><br /><span class="Apple-style-span" >Get your tickets </span><span class="Apple-style-span" ><a href="http://www.trybooking.com/VOV">here</a>.</span>OSIERhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13797363500839356286noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1049963158333452855.post-85181465893152553952011-09-15T14:41:00.001+08:002011-09-15T14:44:33.223+08:00Press for Montage Collective :)<div style="text-align: center;"><iframe src="http://video.perthnow.com.au/embed/2128939671/Pop-into-a-Pop-Up-shop?player=narrow" width="330" height="335" frameborder="0" marginheight="0" marginwidth="0" scrolling="no"></iframe></div><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: center;">lucky me got the cover image :) - and didnt have to talk to the camera either, </div><div style="text-align: center;">thanks to the GORGEOUS Jacquie from <a href="http://empireofdelight.com.au/shop/index.php?main_page=">Empire of Delight</a></div><div style="text-align: center;">x L</div>OSIERhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13797363500839356286noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1049963158333452855.post-62022082065336160462011-09-12T22:57:00.003+08:002011-09-12T23:22:32.119+08:00Looking Back - QLD holiday #2<div style="text-align: center;">Photos of the extra-ordinary. Her photo shoots are sometimes spooky, sometimes sad, sometimes wistful, but always awesome.</div><div>
<br /><div>

And that bow - the talented lass also has an accessories range, but she might have discontinued it because I cant find it right at this moment, although I did do a feature on it <a href="http://osier-handmade.blogspot.com/2010/12/if-i-had-money.html"><span class="Apple-style-span" >back here</span></a>.</div><div>

Love the cut-away details of this piece - a regular feature of Hopeless designs.

<br /></div><div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>Hi All,<div>
<br /></div><div>On Thursday this week me and 14 other buddies from the Perth indie-designer-biz scene opened up our third pop-up shop under the moniker of <a href="http://www.facebook.com/montagecollective">Montage Collective</a>. Our first attempt in Fremantle earlier this year for three weeks in February was a slap dash of whatever we could get together into the HUGE, cobalt blue carpeted space. The second go was in a beautiful old shop in one of the underground/trendy spots in Northbridge which is just coming to be known to regular people, after about 5 years of independent bars, retail, and a super-interesting east-asian community making a dynamic and awesome street. </div><div>Our little shop was due for a reno, having been a barbers shop for more than a couple of decades at least - which meant horrible walls and man-hair in every single crack and crevice of the space. The original high pressed-tin ceiling was a real show stopper though! We were there for the month of July, with a vintage/retro furniture theme - which I loved to bits!</div><div>
<br /></div><div>This time around we're slicking it up though - CBD location, immediately across from the train station, in one of the partially restored heritage retail spaces in the 140 William precinct. The beautiful main building by <a href="http://hassellstudio.com/en/cms-projects/detail/one40william-186/">HASSELL</a> was the host to the last Made on the Left market, which until a couple of weeks ago I was Vice-Chair of (my masters course uni commitments mean I have to take a break for a year and a half), and they also host many of the "cooler" Perth Fashion Festival events in their awesome industrial/office spaces. Plus a couple of my uni mates work at the Perth branch of <a href="http://hassellstudio.com/en/cms-projects/detail/one40william-186/">HASSELL</a> :)</div><div>
<br /></div><div>
<br /></div><div style="text-align: center;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: rgb(0, 0, 238); -webkit-text-decorations-in-effect: underline; "><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: rgb(0, 0, 0); "><img src="http://hassellstudio.com/cms_images/186_25-07-2011_1325.png" border="0" alt="" style="display: block; margin-top: 0px; margin-right: auto; margin-bottom: 10px; margin-left: auto; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 550px; height: 400px; " /></span></span></div><div>
<br />Anyway, back from architecture to Montage! In the space this time around we have had the wonderful fortune of being sponsored by <a href="http://www.shopforshops.com/">Shop4Shops</a> for our shmick, more professional retail fittings, which really help pull in the city-type people. I hope you can go have a look at the space, it really is something awesome. Otherwise, <a href="http://www.facebook.com/montagecollective?sk=photos">check out the photos on our facebook page</a>.</div><div>
<br /></div><div>Oh, and we have a man-land themed space, so you can start thinking about fathers day!</div><div>
