Hello!

I must say its lovely to be back, after the long weeks of hard slog at uni. Christmas is gearing up, as is my excitement about getting back into the swing of running my darling little businesses! Keep note this week, as I will be updating my online shops with a whole manner of new and new-to-the-internet designs that I think you'll love (they certainly have a few fans in the market world). I'll also be listing a COLLOSAL amount of vintage over at www.acornsvintage.etsy.com, and I hope you'll be able to find something there that takes your fancy for a Christmas present to yourself or someone else - I'll be sure to preview them here too for a reminder!

Also make sure you pop-over to the facebook page as I'll be running a comp there in the next week for my fans - naming one of my design ranges!

Also very excited about my return to roller derby practice tomorrow night, and the amount of Christmas markets I'll be at!

But now for the real reason for my return - a challenge to all of you with an Etsy store! (myself included...

These new pretties are being dropped off at Montage Collective tomorrow along

with many other wonderful things. 'Tis the first time in a while I've made something out of all new/non-handmade components - its a strange feeling that i'm not too sure I feel

comfortable with. I'm so used to having that extra level of involvement in my designs,

like hand-molding the flowers, or using vintage components, or using lasercut parts that I have myself designed, had cut, and controlled, that to

create with normal things is an adventure... so why did I choose to be different

this time around? I loved the combination so much I just couldn't help it!!!

The Spring Roll

Puns, bruises and rollergirls await you for just $11 at the last bout of the 2011 between the two teams of my roller derby league. If all goes well and I pass the tests that await me in the next few months, I could very well be playing sometime next year, which is a pretty darn scary thought when you see the girls in action.

Roller Derby has a fairly wide audience, families with young kids love coming along and watching women kick ass at a sport thats far from "ladylike". You get the groups of teens, and considering watching sports isnt exactly "cool" for most teens these days, we've got to be doing something pretty amasing for them to want to watch. And then we get the old couples who remember Roller Derby in its earlier incarnations of the 20s-50s, and are proud to see girls on skates again, bashing each other up :)

Hopeless Lingerie - Hip Hip Hooray

One of my favorite and one of the most inspiring Australian handmade labels turned three today, and so I thought I'd give you all a quick look at whats currently floating my boat from Gaby's collection. Her photo shoots are sometimes spooky, sometimes sad, sometimes wistful, but always awesome.

Have seriously been considering getting these for roller-derby. All the girls would be SO LELLOUS. :)

See what I mean about styling? And that bow - the talented lass also has an accessories range, but she might have discontinued it because I cant find it right at this moment, although I did do a feature on it back here.

The gorgeous photoshoots are often the brainchildren of the photographers Gaby employs to present her handmade wonderfuls in the best light possible - I'd love to have a label that not only promoted myself, but others in the independent creative scene too! Love the cut-away details of this piece - a regular feature of Hopeless designs.

The colour palettes she chooses for her collections are always unusual - but they work so well, you almost dont notice them unless you pay attention.

This is what I mean about the spooky.

These would also get some use as outer wear at rollerderby practice methinks... that triangle panel on the side is actually see-through mesh! Awesome...

Montage Collective 3

Hi All,

On Thursday this week me and 14 other buddies from the Perth indie-designer-biz scene opened up our third pop-up shop under the moniker of Montage Collective. Our first attempt in Fremantle earlier this year for three weeks in February was a slap dash of whatever we could get together into the HUGE, cobalt blue carpeted space. The second go was in a beautiful old shop in one of the underground/trendy spots in Northbridge which is just coming to be known to regular people, after about 5 years of independent bars, retail, and a super-interesting east-asian community making a dynamic and awesome street.

Our little shop was due for a reno, having been a barbers shop for more than a couple of decades at least - which meant horrible walls and man-hair in every single crack and crevice of the space. The original high pressed-tin ceiling was a real show stopper though! We were there for the month of July, with a vintage/retro furniture theme - which I loved to bits!

This time around we're slicking it up though - CBD location, immediately across from the train station, in one of the partially restored heritage retail spaces in the 140 William precinct. The beautiful main building by HASSELL was the host to the last Made on the Left market, which until a couple of weeks ago I was Vice-Chair of (my masters course uni commitments mean I have to take a break for a year and a half), and they also host many of the "cooler" Perth Fashion Festival events in their awesome industrial/office spaces. Plus a couple of my uni mates work at the Perth branch of HASSELL :)

Anyway, back from architecture to Montage! In the space this time around we have had the wonderful fortune of being sponsored by Shop4Shops for our shmick, more professional retail fittings, which really help pull in the city-type people. I hope you can go have a look at the space, it really is something awesome. Otherwise, check out the photos on our facebook page.

Oh, and we have a man-land themed space, so you can start thinking about fathers day!

Looking Back - QLD holiday

I kind of lost momentum blogging about my trip to QLD during the last uni break. Unfortunately it meant that I didnt get to share a huge amount of really quite awesome photos (IMO).

We stayed at this super super dodgy motel one night (mum didnt realise its dodgyness until it was too late). EVERYTHING in the chalet (except the light bulbs i suspect) was at the latest probably mid 70s. It was pure gold photography wise, but it smelt bad, you sank in the bed (thankfully i made my own bed so i at least know the sheets were clean), and you could hear EVERYTHING through the paper thin walls. My mum is like THE champion snorer :P

Another essay-style whinge post! Yay!

I've had the unfortunate luck to have had my bike stolen on Saturday afternoon. My lovely, slightly rusty, vintage dip-frame, faded pale apricot indi 500 flamingo was I assume taken by one of the lovely bus-stop patrons (the bus stops right outside our house) as a quick get-out-of-the-rain steal...

Apparently I deserved this, as I had left it unchained (well, the chain was locked to its-self under the saddle), and at the front door, which is about 5m from the property boundary. While this does suggest neglect on my part, I simply didn't think anyone but me would appreciate its rusty frame, sagging seat and slightly dodgy brakes - and so there wasn't a need to protect it from unscrupulous bike bandits. Plus the fact that said bike bandit WALKED UP OUR DRIVEWAY and onto the property to steal it away.

So all in all, I was annoyed, especially as I used my lovely bike to ride to the train station, the local IGA and for general joy-rides, as well as the post office when I can be bothered - which meant I had to start the hunt for a new two-wheeled friend right away... Can I just say gumtree is awesome? The next day my brother and I drove off to pick up my new, $25 royal blue indi 500 bike. Its a little more rusty, and a little incomplete (missing brake levers and cables, and might need new wheels depending on how rusty the spokes are on closer inspection) but considering the price, I'm happy with that.

And you know what? I like this bike more. Its got a basket, a back carrier, a working adorable bell, and its a nicer frame... oh, and it has twice the amount of gears of the last one, which seeing as my first gear was STILL too hard when moseying along on my old bike, is a very good thing!!! Plus I was lucky enough to not have put my new expensive tan wall tyres on my old bike before it was stolen, and they fit my new bike too! Hoorah!

So... sort-of thank you bike bandit. I hope the brakes finally fail just when you decide to ride down a massive steep hill with a brick wall at the bottom. xx Lauren

Hi Everyone,

Thanks for still being here when I decided to come back from my journey to hell! (read as final weeks of uni semester). It was a really hard slog this half-year, mostly because I have lost all sense of discipline and self control when it comes to computer time. I don't know why its so hard to switch off the computer/log out of facebook/turn off the tv and actually DO SOMETHING. I've been speaking to my crafty friends about this too and a lot of them are having the same problem as I am. I achieve nothing, feel guilty/crappy about it, and gain a sore neck and back from it... so why is it so appealing to me?

One of the reasons is that I've trained my mind into a cycle of distraction. I literally and honestly cant concentrate on one thing for more than 10 minutes now without getting antsy and wanting to do something else - be it checking facebook, google reader or making a cup of tea (for those that don't know, I drink about 7 cups a day). And by not pushing through and forcing myself to do the task at hand, I reinforce the behavior and so it goes on...

So I've decided to take action. I'm making a commitment. I'm taking a small first step, because then it wont seem so overwhelming. I WILL SUCCEED at this small step, and in doing so, will give myself the endorphin rush of actually DOING something for once.

And that small step was this post. Because I've been meaning to get back into blogging since the 6th, and I've finally managed on the 18th. And you know what? I feel great at having written the longest post I've EVER written. It is a self-absorbed rant on an uninteresting subject, on a blog which I have purposely kept from being any deeper than a puddle. But its going to lead to better things, more interesting content in the future, and an enthusiasm for getting off my butt and ACHIEVING. And I'm super excited about it.

Oh, and one more thing. I'd like you to join me on your blogs (yes, the ones you've been neglecting!), your facebooks, or your twitter. Write a post on something you've been putting off. And then I want you to DO IT. You know why? Cause it feels super :)

While I'm here, I'm going to commit to my next procrastination job. I'm going to go measure up my Dads spare living space for a mezzanine addition. Right now.

Masters is JUST TOO TIME CONSUMING AND HARD, and I'm really struggling to do much other than do all the shit I have to do now I'm out of home, and all the uni work I have to do, plus sleep. So blogging and OSIER are taking a break, because instead of being a wonderful relaxing fun thing to do, its become an unwonderful stressfull unfun thing to do.

So I'll see you all on June 6th, first Monday of the between semesters uni break.

Moving and first week back at uni at once has really sucked it out of me, so apologies for the lack of posts, and for the lack of words today :)

Last time I got to listen to new music from them was 2006 when my boyfriend at the time bought me the last album they released for my birthday 9 days after it came out - hardest 9 days of my life!!!

Sometimes I marvel at how many new friends I've made through the craft world, and just how special some of those friends are to me. We've shared deaths, births (a freaky amount of twins actually - another reason for me not to procreate!), separations/divorces, and marriage.

Annie is one of the women I identify most with in our little group. She lives a creative life and has lived overseas for long periods of time - some of my life goals. On top of this she's a wonderfully warm, kind and giving person, and despite our rather signifiant age-gap, I really do relate to her easier than a LOT of people my age. So when she invited us all to her re-wedding ceremony this month, I couldn't stop grinning like an idiot the whole time.

And here is a pic of me at the wedding just so I don't melt into a pile of love-mush. Haha. The dress is an op-shop find for $7, which the other craft-ladies in attendance told me this was a exxy myer brand. While that does explain the expert lining and beautiful pintucks, I really love it just because it suits me and now has the extra special memory of Annie's wedding attached to it - its old life as a designer dress isn't even really a sweetner for me, I've just accepted it as part of the story that most second-hand clothes have to offer. The ring (which you cant really see) is an old thrifted wing charm glued to one of my ring-bases, and the glasses are the most expensive peice of fashion I own (by a LONG LONG way) at $350 dollars or so ...eep. The shoes are just op-shop buys that were new at purchase - original pricetag and elastic still attached.

SUCH a beautiful setting. And the bride looked very gorgeous and "freo" in a bright floral print top, hand-dyed orange pants, a flower wreath in her hair and a GORGEOUS button bouquet by Liza, a very talented (and busy) lady in our group.

Taking Action on New Years Resolution #3 : start some form of regular exercise.

First time I've ever really found sport exciting in terms of actually doing it (gimme live AFL Dockers any day of the week)... They have training once a week, yay! Hopefully it will fit in with uni. If not, there may be tears.

I've got "Fresh Meat" signups (i.e. Newbie Intake) this Thursday. Wish me luck.

Things I did in 2010

Finally stopped wishing for someone elses hair and started loving my own. Mind you, I still straighten my fringe and dye my hair (I'm an ashy/grey blonde naturally), but I no longer have jealous lusting fits over other peoples hair and have deep resentful sulks about my own.

Yup, the new year :)

Well I've been really happy with 2010; met lots of lovely people, became firm friends with a few, and finally got the haircut of my dreams :)

I've only got a few resolutions. But they're really important, so I must stick to them. This is my first year to make resolutions, so we'll see how I go.

1. spend less time on my laptop. honestly, this baby takes up waaaay too much of my time. So i'm gonna restrict myself to four hours a day (yes i now this is still a lot but believe me i spend waaaaaay more than that on here at the moment) unless I'm doing uni work or its a Made on the Left emergency (we have quite a few). This will equal more time getting real life stuff done, and less time thinking or planning (or blogging) about getting stuff done.

2. eat healthier. this will actually be a lot easier, as i'll be cooking all my own food (which I LOVE to do) once i move out in feb, and I won't be moving house every Wednesday, so I can organise things in advance and freeze. Gonna be really yummy... looking forward to it!

3. start some form of regular exercise. i haven't exercised for about three years, to tell the truth. disgusting, i know. but i've taken positive steps, such as doing up a vintage bike and getting a helmet, plus signing up for rollerderby training - yes i know its dangerous and i'll always have bruises but no other team sport appeals to me except netball and i cant be bothered finding a team.

4. stop being so shy around boys.

Moving Out #1

Well I'm moving out in Feb with a lovely chickie I've known since I was 6, and I'm really excited!

I'll finally be a proper grown-up!

Day 6 : Mountains of Glass Houses & Berries of Straw

The day's events consisted of driving, driving, and going on a wild sign chase that lead us down about 20 differnt roads, tracks and such to a strawberry farm where we picked a whole box (like the one I'm holding) FULL of berries for just $15! More than 3/4 of them went yuk in the days afterwards, but i think its just becuase we didnt put them in the fridge so they all got cooped up and ripened together too quick. I ate them for about 4 days afterwards as my breakfast with greek yoghurt... yummmm.

Earlier in the day we'd stopped by the Glasshouse Mountains, the place where my grandfathers family ran a pinapple farm after moving here as Irish potato famine immigrants, from what I can gather. I took so photos from the lookout of course...

And of the house my grandfather was brought up in. Please be noted my Mums parents and grandparents (both maternal and paternal) have MAJOR ISSUES. Well, only two do technically as they're the only ones alive. Makes me so grateful that I'm in Perth away from all the drama that has gone down and continiues to constantly. If I know you, get me to tell you what happened on this holiday a few days later...

The old house is of course "nothing like it used to be", and is now surrounded by macadamia trees instead of pinapples. Oh, you must look up pictures of pinapple plants that have pinapples on them. Freakiest. Shit. Ever.

Festivities - The Commandments

What actually happened:

I made my recipie for soft honey chew biscuits, and was going to put extra ginger in the recipie to make it gingerbread like. But instead I ran out of honey, substituted golden syrup, and couldnt find the ginger. In fact I dont think the pantry at Dads HAS ginger. Plus I CBF icing them either, so all in all the only thing going for them was their shape, which was awesome cause they tessellated into a snowflake type thing when I put them in my favorite serving dish (actually a pie dish but HUSH YOU.)

They are all gone now :) Might make another batch for the Xmas party with the crafty girls.

Day 4 : Roadtrips and Rollercoasters

I did intend to do just a picture post today, but my little brother has deleted all my photos. I hope he saved them on his computer, otherwise I'm gonna be angry. I had tigers and "my head on a wanted poster" fun-park kind of stuff, so nothing hugely exciting. But my baby tiger photos are SO CUTE.

But I did enjoy my favourite rides - the rollercoasters. They're so hugely awesome. The combination of speed, g-force and being able to scream at the top of your lungs without people glaring at you (my brothers actually punch me in the arm at home when I scream :) ) really does it for me.

Currently in a beautiful white house (my mum's old uni friend) that looks onto the east ocean. If I was brave I'd get up early and watch the sun rise over the sea while i drink coffee and huddle in my grey cardigan on the deck. We'll see if that happens though.

Day 3 : Shopping and Inebriated Wanderings

SO.

Today I went shopping for my cousins dress and rest-of-outfit (she is the sister of the groom, who's wedding is the actul cause of us being in Q. She looks very nice in it :)

Being the first time in a long time that I've shopped in a real store, not just a dollar shop or an op shop or groceries, I went a little crazy and bought; owl gumboots, a flip clock - you know, the ones with the numbers that flip over - and several Chrissie presents that are awesome but I cant tell you cause I know they read my blog (hey Ali, hey Niina). But rest assured they are very cute/awesome/appropriate.

They are also unavailable in WA, cause the shop that all this awesome stuff was in is actually in every single state and territory EXCEPT MINE. Its a REALLY COOL STORE AND I CANT HAVE IT SO I'M ANGRY. Its even in FREAKING NEW ZEALAND!!! So yes, exclusive gifts.

And I also bought this ring. It is two tiny deer on a log bridge. It is hugely cute. It would be cuter if they were kissing though. :)

And then tonight I got taken to a gamer-bar. Manabar? I think? Anyway I got my photo taken by the staff and apparently its going on facebook so my geekness can be shown to all of mankind. But I have to say I cheated a bit cause I just played mario-cart and arcade style games, as well as had a "Princess Peaches" cocktail, plus a mint one and a chocolate/cream shot that were also named with assorted gamer references, of which I got none (I am not a gamer, but my two little brothers are so I "get" stuff more frequently than the regular poulation, but not enough to not be completly inadequate at Halo... But it was a cute tiny place, and the toilet graffiti and stickers were excellent. Which is really all you need from a small bar.

Once we were suitably bored of playing games, we went on a wander around what is sort of a better version of Northbridge - less scary, more bars, more people, less dickheads.

Anywhoo I just got told by bigger-little-brother that it's actually "Mana Bar" - which references a thing in a game thats like a "Health" bar, but a little different. So thar yee goo.

Ok, at this point I need to tell you that my cousin and I had worn our gumboots out to the bar for kicks-and-giggles. We both wore short black dresses and tights too. We were matching.

On our walk around, we went down a Chinatown mall, which had awesome fountains, which in our lightly tipsy mood automatically became a stomping ground for our awesome gumboots - weird how something which was just initially for random fun turned into totally appropriate footwear. Plus we also raced boats made from asian-community newspapers and put paper hats on rainbow carp statues.

I'll spare you all but two of the many grainy/blurry videos and photos. If you're a facebook friend you can have a look at the whole hilarious mess. Well, it was hilarious at the time, now I'm just full of McYuk fries and really tired.

Day 2 : Relatives and Food

So today we went on a mini-road trip to see some of my many many many relatives that live in QLD (my Mum comes from QLD so half my rellies are here, and half are home in Perf (there is a sweet romantic story involving playing entire Crowded House songs over the phone behind the cross-state thing but seeing as my parents are now divorced it's a tad moot) - plus one family in London - HAVE to go and stay with them sometime.

So I slept on the way to my great aunt and uncles in our HUGE MASSIVE BIG LARGE rental people mover and then ate lots of handmade tea-cake and bakery bought slice and store bought biscuits. Guess what tasted best.

And then took about 100 photos on the way back. I picked the ones of cool signs. I cant beleive there is actually a sign for dugongs.

Plus this house looks like its supposed to be in UP.
It would be even better if the fence was pickett.

So yeah. Got up at 6am for the plane/s. Right now I'm on the brother's laptop 'cause mine's flat (from watching Ghost in the Shell with the other brother) - and on hella slow internets. So we'll see if the pic upload actually works.

You Think You Know Me

My MP3 player stopped working last year and ever since I've kind of been on a CD/Record kick. In car = my CDs or triple j, and Home = latest downloads on the laptop, or records on my parents' turntables, or my respectable sized CD collection. Its kind of great to listen to music with other sounds around as well, sometimes I think that earbuds are way too insular - the only time I remember bonding with someone over music in highschool was on the bus when we'd stick one in the person who was sitting next to you's ear - you'd share a little bit of your world, or they'd share a bit of theirs. Sometimes we'd put one of each in our ear and listen to the weird song combinations the two songs would make - usually it wasn't that great but every so often the tempos and beats would match up and we'd look at each other in excitement and surprise.

But otherwise it was "oh, they've got their music on, just leave them alone".

So in preparation of two weeks in close quarters with the fam, I've dusted off my discman and gotten all my cds into one zip case... I know, amasing right, things that were basically attached to every teens body as of 6 years ago (wow I'm getting old) are now replaced by tiny things that can store more songs than most of us could listen to in ten years.

I should probably get another MP3 player. But for now my trusty discman gets to live another day...

...even if it does skip annoyingly when I dance around like a maniac.

Born Together

This is the first video I've ever made. Pretty cool huh? I'm so proud of me :)

Its a stop motion film created from over 300 photos taken with my Nikon D5000 on an old vintage tripod (that I scored for $5 at an opshop) in 10 or 30 second self-timed intervals.

I then used a free program called JPGVideo to collate the images into a video by dividing the seconds in the song I wanted to use by the amount of images I had (plus some wiggle room for end credits) and then using that number to space the images.

I then dumped that into Windows Movie Maker, which I had never even opened before and was delighted with how easy it was to use - didn't have to use web-help once! Once it was in there I added the audio file and the end credit image which was made by layering text over the final image in photoshop and then saving as a jpg.

Then I exported the whole she-bang and uploaded to Vimeo. :)

He's a bit strange

But has a velvet voice so he can get away with it I suppose. The "I'm off my tits" head bobbing weids me out something chronic though. Kind of like David Grey (Mr Bobblehead - go look up a video of him and you'll see what I mean), but much much much much cooler.

I would like to let you all know that the reason I have seen this is because my Dad is a fan. No other embarrasing stories behind that knowledge. Unlike a friend of mine who confessed his first concert ever was Savage Garden because he was obsessed with them. And he hadnt been to any live music since then (this was four years ago, and we are 21. You do the math).

But onto strange lead-singer antics with awesome music...

I always feel idiotic once I find out what the lyrics to a song actually are. This is one of them - I've just been kind of mindlessly humming along whenever this comes on the radio, and then I find that he's singing about "blood-buzz" - hipster vampire reference? Maybe?

I really have no idea. It's 12.24 and usually that isnt late but I have an infected sinus and throat from severe hayfever (the devil isnt a red dude with horns, its heavily brut-ed teenage boys - one of which lives in my house. that and flowers.) which means that I need much more sleep than normal but I cant cause I have a 2500 word assignment due at 4pm tomorrow and I've only written... *goes and does wordcount tool* ... 251 of them. So the knowledge that I probably will be getting very little sleep, in addition to knowing I have a vintage market I'm supposed to be ready for by now that on on Sunday and my little brother (the one that doesnt smother himself in hayfever inducing "deoderant") wont give me the commodore to lug my vintage things down to Freo makes me want to go to bed extra bad.

Gosh I wish I had written this many words in my essay instead of procrastinating here. It's now 12.39.

Sorry to have freaked you all out with my mind-spew, I seem to have a habit of doing that (my facebook friends know what I'm talking about). But I think this is the most pretentious blog post I have ever written - so feel free to deride me in the comments if you wish - or ignore this post entirely perhaps. I won't get mad.

I'm a bit strange. Perhaps Mr The National and I can have a late night chat. Once I finish this essay...

Pigeonhole Vintage Opening

These are from way back when Pigeonhole Vintage opened, we visited 4 of the 5 stores that day, and I got major blisters from wearing my t-bar heels - which are sexy as hell but quite high.

Niina wore a super cute vintage sailor dress, which spawned a conversation about Sailor Moon with the very friendly shop assistant in Shop 9 Shafto Lane (next to Capitol and Amplifier) who's name was Patrick.

So yes, don't have photos of the vintage store, but have photos of Shop 9 - the mural is by local artist Sean Morris. I love the restricted colour palette, really classy.

Live @ The Astor Theatre 2nd October

Little Red are quickly stealing their way into the number one place in my heart. Which is an achievement, considering they've only got two albums and are toddlers as far as the music industry is concerned. usually I place my love with other more established bands...

I'm getting better at taking concert photos, but still have a long way to go. Practice makes perfect - take a look at all the other ones (there is an embarrassingly large amount) on my flickr.

Decided I'm going to do more of a photo journal as I cant be sh*tted to tell you about all the sleepy towns, heritage buildings and cute baby moments (not mine, I can assure you - Ali's baby Eloise).

Basic Info : I've been in Dwellingup since Monday living with Ali while she does her 3 week artist residency. I've been creating my socks off and making a stop-motion animation of Ali creating one of her works... I'll show it to you once I'm done.

And now Niina's here too. Yay!

Note the Harry Potter reference (getting so excited it's rather embarrassing), the Little Red postcards (seeing their new show on Saturday night, triple excitement - they're such a great band) and the candy heart lollies from my friends 21st last Saturday that had treasure-lolly-bags when you went home (with parachute soldiers, bubble-mix and party poppers), so cute, reminded me of how awesome parties were when I was little.

So yeash, making lots of cards, going bonkers with paper doileys, having fun spelling things out with scrabble-tiles, and making fabric-covered buttons.

Oh. And drinking tea. Can't forget that.
